MYSTERY SOLVED! Thank You Willoughby Historical Society for tracking down and providing us with the background of who built our wonderful musical home... very interesting!
"Prior to the Mahan family, the house was owned by Mayor Louis W. Penfield. The house's estimated build year is 1892, which would have made him about 35 years old and is also the year he was elected Mayor. This leads me to believe it is likely that Mayor Penfield built the house! Mayor Penfield also ran the American Clay Machinery Company- a manufacturer of clay, tiles, and bricks- after his uncle and father. It is very likely that the house was built using Penfield bricks! American Clay was one of the largest employers in the late 1800s and early 1900s, boasting over 200 employees at their Willoughby plant and also a similar number at their Bucyrus location. The massive building still stands today at 38294 Pelton Rd!
I do not know if any families resided there between the Penfield's and the Mahan's, but Mayor Penfield passed away in 1929. He served as Mayor of Willoughby from 1892-1894. His grandson, Louis A. Penfield, was an artist and had a Frank Lloyd Wright house built for himself in Willoughby Hills (you may have seen the Magnolia Network special showing the process of the Dykstra's building his last blueprint on that property.)"
